The maker of brilliant documentaries telling stories of men and their struggle with the structures of society, but also the creator of poignant leading ladies, the film-maker of moral concern and philosophical pondering, the entomologist of sentiment: which was the true face of Krzysztof Kieslowski? The Polish film director, who died exactly twenty years ago at the age of fifty-four, created a cinema that embraced all of these different identities and influenced both writing and image in the future films of film-makers the world over. Stanley Kubrick use to say of his Decalogue that it was the best thing he had seen in many years and that he would like to have directed it himself. Many critics have compared Kieslowski to the greatest directors of all time, to Bergman, to Fellini and to Hitchcock. The Kieslowski Passion retrospective, the most important retrospective devoted to the director in many years, pays tribute to his genius with an outstanding programme that starts with his very first shorts in the 1960s and takes us right up to his extremely famous Colours Trilogy, via such masterpieces as The Double Life of Véronique and the Decalogue, which will be pre-premiered here in its newly restored version.
