First love

A young couple has to face an unexpected pregnancy. The camera follows the couple from their initial discovery, through their marriage and the baby's birth, tracking their laborious struggle with the bureaucracy and poverty of the communist society of the time. Kieslowski managed to get the young couple assigned a home thanks to this film.

One of Kieslowski's most personal films because it was filmed in Sokolowsko, the town where he grew up and in whose hospital his father died, this documentary records the confessions of the sick, their dreams and their fears, and it also explores the wonderfully unspoilt natural environment surrounding the hospital.

The camera uninterruptedly tracks the 36-hour shifts of medics and orthopaedic surgeons in a hospital with surgical instruments breaking, constant power cuts, and basic equipment missing, but the doctors plough on hour after hour, and even manage to stay in a good mood.
