in collaboration with Istituto Polacco di Roma, Fondazione Cineteca Italiana (Milano)
Now in its eight year, A Qualcuno Piace Classico sticks to the winning formula that made the program one of the must-sees for all the film lovers in the capital city. 35mm prints of fifteen more masterpieces from the past will be screened for free, while seats last. Audiences will be able to rediscover on the big screen the work of genius filmmakers like Ozu, Lynch, Dreyer, Preminger, Bresson, Boorman and many more. Promoted by Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia – Cineteca Nazionale, Azienda Speciale Palaexpo and La Farfalla sul Mirino, the event starts on Tuesday, October 30th with a precious work by Woody Allen, The Purple Rose Of Cairo, a homage to the lost Hollywood magic and the daydream quality of cinema.
The second screening is one of the special events of this edition, The Mother of Kings by Janusz Zaorski. It is a masterpiece produced in 1982 but banned for years by the Communist regime, presented here in a rare 35mm print provided by the archives of Istituto Polacco di Roma as part of the celebration of 100 years of Polish Independence. Among the other events, there are the screening of Fistful of Dollars by Sergio Leone, on April 30th, 2019, to celebrate the thirtieth anniversary of the death of the Roman-born director, and the screening of Otona No Miru Ehon - Umarete Wa Mita Keredo, a silent film by Yasujirō Ozu, regarded as one of the peaks of the Japanese master, accompanied live on piano by the Maestro Antonio Coppola.
American Cinema from the Seventies will get a lot of attention on this edition. Some memorable titles from that striking era will be screened, such as Deliverance by Boorman; the legendary (and very rare) Pink Flamingos by John Waters; Badlands, the first feature film by Terrence Malick; Conrack, a strong social commentary by Martin Ritt. Golden Age Hollywood will be represented by two of its most gifted filmmakers, Preston Sturges (The Lady Eve) and Otto Preminger (Anatomy Of a Murder), while Les Dames du Bois de Boulogne by Robert Bresson and Gertrud by Dreyer will keep up the flag of European auteur cinema at its most uncompromising. The "new" classics will be represented by three films that have become cult-objects through the years: Blue Velvet by David Lynch, The Dead Zone by David Cronenberg, based on a novel by Stephen King, and the last film of the program, The Belly Of an Architect by Peter Greenaway, that will be screened on May 28th, a formidable homage to the immortal beauty of the city of Rome.
