France 1945, directed by Robert Bresson, starring María Casarès, Paul Bernard, Elina Labourdette
b/w, 84’, 35mm, original language with Italian subtitles
Hélène is a rich bourgeoisie woman. Her young lover leaves her, but she's incapable of accepting it, so she devises a cruel revenge. Inspired by a passage of Jacques the Fatalist, by Diderot, Bresson's second feature film already shows the filmmaker's mastery in drawing psychologically rich characters and in staging bare and clear mise-en-scenes. A melodrama as clear as a diamond, written by the director along with Jean Cocteau.
