directed by Joel Coen, starring Billy Bob Thornton, Frances McDormand and Michael Badalucco, UK, USA 2001, 116 min., 35mm, Italian version
On discovering that his wife is being unfaithful, a barber in a small provincial town tries to shake off his apathy by blackmailing her lover. Filmed in black and white, brilliantly capturing the existential squalor and creeping fatalism of 1940s noir movies, the atmosphere providing the perfect setting for the superbly taciturn, passive and demotivated anti-hero. The film won the prize for best director at the Cannes Festival.
