Two kids are up for anything in order to face the bullies at school and get some respect from them. But then they find out that their father is not as brave as them, since he's constantly forced to make his boss happy. Ozu's first successful feature film is about the rigid hierarchy of Japanese society, drenched in a mood of melancholic resignation. The director looks at ease with the shomin-geki genre, which focuses on the lives of common working class people. Ozu would then go on to become a master of the genre.
