UK 1987, directed by Peter Greenaway, starring Brian Dennehy, Lambert Wilson, Chloe Webb
color, 118’, 35mm, Italian dubbed version
An American architect and his wife travel to Rome to set up an exhibition about eighteenth-century French architect Etienne-Louis Boullée. But she cheats on him, and the man inexorably sinks into illness and paranoia. Greenaway is here at the top of his game: this is one of his most compelling works, where considerations on death and the celebration of art's power live together, and the city of Rome is a strikingly beautiful compendium of the two.
