The pictures and stories told in documentaries have shown their worth in recent years as the most sensitive and effective tool for explaining the complexity of the world around us, in a challenge to the laziness of the media and to the limited visibility of the printed press, whose best ally is frequently the Internet itself. In telling personal tales set against the backdrop of epoch-making events or in addressing phenomena that impact our society as a whole, the best documentary filmmakers become the reporters, the analysts and the historians of our time, providing us with an opportunity to share in testimonies and probes that are becoming increasingly necessary in a media context as frozen as Italy's, where precious few niches are made available for exploring reality on television, in the bookstores, on the newsstands and in videothèques. Things of This World comprises a program whose intensity and rhythm are very different from those of an ordinary film festival, a program that can be followed and remain stimulating in its scope and variety, ranging over situations (from the Congo to Iran, from Colombia to Japan, and from Palestine to North Korea) and issues all of which are very definitely in the urgent column on today's international agenda: human rights, conflicts, international politics, the environment, freedom of expression, high finance and the economy, not to mention the future of information itself - with respect to which, every single one of these films gives us a good reason to be optimistic.
