KEYNOTE SPEECH - TRESPASSING EUROPE: TOWARDS
THE NEW INTERNATIONAL
VASYL CHEREPANYN | Visual Culture Research Centre, Kyiv

Today, in the age of structural crisis of global institutions, when the maintenance of a transnational status quo is constructed from violated borders, peripheral wars, and the emergence of new walls and conflicts, Europe has been facing a great number of challenges and threats – infractions to established territorial parameters and protection mechanisms, the mass displacement of people, the shrinking of its territory after Brexit, and the rise of far-right populism, becoming a battlefield for new forms of terrorism. Questioning the neocolonial mode of relationship between the European metropolis and its peripheries and discovering the potential for transformation of the European project in the context of 'the bigger Europe', the idea of cross-border unity and international solidarity is of utmost urgency for the future survival of Europe. The development of a newly emerging collective subjectivity grounded in democratic internationalism can indicate a possible exit strategy from the current political deadlock of economic crisis, nationalistic populisms, and war.

LET’S TALK FUTURE!
In driving Europe forward, we must not forget to look around. With economic growth driving the major Asian countries to superpower status, and migration bringing global challenges to the EU’s doorstep, it is critical to take in perspectives from other parts of the world and look at how we can develop future external relations. If Europe is still to play a role in a rapidly developing world, we should not be afraid to challenge ourselves and ask difficult questions, so that we can continue to promote a peaceful, democratic worldview worldwide. The role of culture in these, the overarching issues of our times, forms the basis of this session
