Who doesn't feel embarrassed when hearing a recording of their own voice? Experiencing a sense of rejection ("Can that really be me?"), we discover that we are the healthy carriers of a foreign medium – albeit a medium essential to our relations with the world and with our fellows -– almost as through it were an entity generated by a void. While it is true that the voice is the sound of our thoughts and conveys our emotions, tells people about us and identifies us unmistakably, its nature remains an enigma for most of us. To narrate and to explore this mystery that makes us human, we have chosen some of the great movie stories that all share an unseen leading player: the voice. These films track communication through very different experiences: pathological, non verbal-animal, artistic, artificial and supernatural – voices blocked, extinguished, sung, the voices of nature or voices mediated by technology (from the telephone and the radio right up to artificial intelligence), hysterical voices, sinister voices, superhuman or divine voices – rebuilding a sound anthropology of our presence in the world.
Our gratitude for the films goes to: Bim Distribuzione, Cinefonie, Cinema Srl, Eagle Pictures, Fandango, Fondazione Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia – Cineteca Nazionale, Fondazione Cineteca di Bologna, I Wonder Pictures, Lucky Red, MPLC, Pinch Media, Rai Teche, The Match Factory, Universal and Warner Bros.
