Bringing back local woods for the future of cities
an encounter with Carlo Blasi, Sapienza Università di Roma

Bringing nature back into our lives starting in the city to facilitate biodiversity and reduce environmental pollution: that is one of the aims of the PNRR which proposes to reintroduce local trees and bushes into our urban systems. With over 4.5 million plants already planted, Carlo Blasi, co-author of the proposal and President of the Foundation for Italian Flora, tells us how operations of the kind are possible despite the meagre availability of spaces and plants in urban areas, and he discusses their impact on our present and future.

Plants, us, intelligence
an encounter with Paola Bonfante, Università di Torino, Accademia dei Lincei, Rome

Are plants intelligent? Do they talk to each other? Their ability to respond to the environment and their astonishing capacity for survival have prompted a number of researchers and popularisers to talk about plant intelligence, and more recently about their “feelings”. Plant biologist Paola Bonfante, who has devoted her scientific career to deciphering the dialogue between plants and fungi, will be illustrating the different approaches to this question, and telling us how crucial it is not to confuse plants’ capacity for adaptation with an awareness.
