(USA 1937) directed by William Wyler, starring Humphrey Bogart, Sylvia Sidney, B/W, duration: 93’, 35mm Original version, Italian subtitles
On the run from the police, gangster "Baby Face" Martin returns to the slums of New York's East Side, where he was born. Here he finds support from a group of young hoodlums, but he must clash with an idealistic architect who wants a new life for the neighborhood. Part gangster movie, part naturalistic drama, Wyler's film is certainly ahead of its time in the sensitivity with which it captures the social spirit of the Rooseveltian New Deal.
