The Palazzo delle Esposizioni is addressing contemporary issues once again with a selection of the best documentaries from all over the world, presented by Internazionale in Rome after the journalism fest in Ferrara. As an antidote to too much isolation at home, or as a new summons to a collective commitment not on social media or in front of a screen, the new edition of the retrospective shows recurrent scenes of crowds and protest rallies. The crowd scenes resurface from the G-8 summit in Genoa where the brains behind the colossal bank fraud for political ends in Robin Bank first cut his teeth. Far more recent are the images of the highly colourful squares occupied by climate activists in Extinction Rebellion, a movement whose origin and differences we discover in Rebellion, and of the resistance against corruption, expropriation and breaches of human rights in Ecuador documented in This Stolen Country of Mine. While the final moments of a courageous protest against Putin’s regime behind the fearsome story of repression and judicial hounding in The Case, indicative of the climate in Russia on the eve of the invasion of Ukraine, already seem to be relegated to the recent past. As ever, the retrospective also sets out both to draw renewed attention to issues already addressed in the past yet whose urgency never abates, for instance the Palestinian question in H2: Occupation lab, and to touch on new themes on which a film worthy of those themes has emerged for the first time. This time around it falls to the relationship between paedophilia and technology and on-line risks for under-age children, an alarm bell sounded by The Children in the Pictures.
