directed by Anna Giralt Gris, Spain, Germany, 2022, 79 min., original version with Italian subtitles

The incredible story of Enric Duran, a Catalan activist at the G-8 summit in Genoa, who subsequently took out bank loans to the tune of half a million euro without any intention of ever repaying them. He used the money to fund social projects as his way of denouncing the banking system in its entirety. Risking jail, Duran fled in 2013 but he continues to play an active role in clandestine economic disobedience movements. His actions have caused an uproar and turned him into an antiglobalisation hero. One of the people he has inspired is Anna Giralt Gris, who decided to seek him out in order to tell his story. But when the director tracked him down and found out what really happened, the reality that emerged was far deeper and more complex. Can a single person really save the world?

Statement from the director

Enric got in touch with me four years ago to suggest I document a project on which he was working. Although I did not accept his proposal, I felt that I could not waste this chance to tell his story, because it took me back to something that I feared I had lost, namely faith in our actions and the belief that I could promote change. Inevitably, after a while, I began to realise that it would never happen and I gradually lost a little of the initial naive innocence that drove me to do things. This film has helped me to reconnect with that feeling and has caused me to reflect on my role in society. What am I doing to improve it? What contribution can I make? We live in a historically uncertain and unstable time, which is why I think that we need stories that can help us to believe that a different world is possible.
