The Palazzo delle Esposizioni is thrilled to be able to present a retrospective of Expressionist silent movie masterpieces set to live music thanks to the musical tastes of some of our leading contemporary authors - five writers and a cartoonist - who have been invited to choose the soundtrack they feel best accompanies each film.  Their musical selections, played during the screening by superb deejays, offer us a unique and personal interpretation of the film, restoring a "voice", in the shape of a thoroughly contemporary musical score, to the great movies of the past.
Expressionism marked a fascinating season in the history of the cinema and, almost a century later, its masterpieces still manage to make a profound impression on the modern audience's imagination.  Surprisingly ahead of their time, the Expressionist directors addressed issues that were deeply shocking to audiences in those early cinema theaters, revealing on screen the hidden side of humanity brutally stripped of all reassuring social certainties, and rocked to the core by profoundly mysterious and unwholesome content.  Using shocking and innovative visual strategies, they were the first to drag the cinema down into the sludge of human existence and of contemporary man's subsconscious, replacing the objective representation of reality with a subjective and distorted perception of the world and of the events taking place in it, creating unreal, deformed, oppressing and hallucinatory landscapes.
Expressionism Live allows today's audiences to feel the same sense of astonishment as the very first cinemagoers felt when they were confronted with the visual impact of these movies, thanks to the skilled dialogue between the pictures on the screen and the imagination of the authors involved in the project, who thoroughly enjoyed ransacking their ideal musical playlists to lend a new voice to these visionary worlds, with the complicity of some of the most interesting deejays on our music scene today.
