(Sabotage, UK 1936) directed by Alfred Hitchcock, starring Sylvia Sidney, John Loder and Oskar Homolka, black and white, duration: 76 min., 35mm, original version with Italian subtitles
Film introduced by Raffaele Meale
Verloc, a seemingly humdrum cinema manager, is in fact a terrorist responsible for a series of attacks that are rocking London. His wife is the first person to harbour suspicion in his regard, and almost ends up paying the price for it. An adaptation of Joseph Conrad’s novel The Secret Agent, this is one of the masterpieces of Hitchcock’s English period thanks to his perfect construction of suspense but also to the courage he displayed in many of the choices in the script.
