directed by Billy Wilder, starring Jack Lemmon, Shirley MacLaine, Lou Jacobi, USA 1963, 147 min., colour, DCP, original version with Italian subtitles
A prostitute falls in love with a former cop who persuades her to cater to only one, wealthy client. Disguise is once again the leitmotif in this transgressive comedy with its perfect timing, set in a Paris reconstructed with a taste for the theatrical. In a merry-go-round of outrageous gags, role swapping and the multiplication of identities spawn an increasingly surreal game of pretense, helping both the leading man and us, the audience, to realise that escape can itself become a new kind of prison.
