directed by Joel Coen, starring John Turturro, John Goodman and Judy Davis, UK, USA 1991, 116 min., 35mm, Italian version
The only film in the history of the Cannes Film Festival to have won all three major prizes, the Palme d’Or, best director and best actor, this disturbing noir mystery is both brilliant and original. The leading character, a New York screenplay writer in an astonishing performance by John Turturro, having sold himself to Hollywood, now finds himself caught up in the hellish maelstrom of the movie-making machine.
