Die Puppe, 60 min., Germany 1919, silent movie with German and Italian intertitles, 18 fps, directed by Ernst Lubitsch, with Ossi Oswalda, Victor Janson and Jakob Tiedtke

A young man, forced by his uncle to get married, decides to feign his wedding with a mechanical doll, but the artisan charged with making the doll puts his daughter onto him because he has set his sights on the young man's wealth.  Lubitsch, still a young director at the time, overturns the themes of Expressionism by imparting a comic thrust to them in this, the first masterpiece of his German period.
