Forced to flee in order to avoid a duel, the pianist Stefan Brand receives a letter from an unknown woman telling him how she has been madly in love with him for years, yet has sublimated her passion to the point of denial.  This perfect melodrama strikes an admirable balance between visionary filmmaking and the realistic depiction of sentiment.
