A mature teacher falls in love with a singer called Lola-Lola.  After they marry, he follows her around on tour but has to put up with the worst kinds of humiliation for love.  This key movie in the history of the German cinema – it was to be banned by the Nazis a few years later – made Marlene a living legend and set the scene for her Hollywood partnership with Sternberg.
