A self-styled Russian count rents a villa in Montecarlo and forges ties of friendship with a US diplomat, going on to seduce his new friend's wife and to trigger a horrendous spiral of violence.  This is one of the great Hollywood tragdies whose over-the-top production and cruel realism turned Stroheim into a living legend.
