After spending many years in the big city, Mae returns to the village where she was raised and marries a humble fisherman named Jerry who has been in love with her from time immemorial. But her infatuation for another man traps her into being unfaithful… Lang here handles melodrama with the expressionistic style of the noir genre, forgoing some of his favourite themes (fate, violence, moral ambiguity) in the process. Marilyn Monroe is cast in a minor yet memorable role in the film.
