The 1970s were a crucial time of transition for Italy; between the thrust towards innovation and a reversion into violence, they left a permanent mark on our identity, helping in many ways to shake off the old and ring in the new. It was a time of violent clashes and of unprecedented cruelty, but also a time of participation and of sharing. Kids in the 'seventies went to rallies and marches, to concerts and the cinema en masse. They piled into the cinema theatres, seeking new content and stimulus for debate. The season was dominated by great film directors: Antonioni, Fellini, Pasolini, Visconti, Petri, Monicelli and Bertolucci were the geniuses who interpreted the decade, using their poetic vision to translate it into powerful and prophetic images. The success of the era's films can be gauged not only by the effort put into them by great directors, or even by a number of surprising newcomers such as Dario Argento or Nanni Moretti, but also by the development of uniquely Italian genres: thrillers, from Bava down; westerns by that giant of a man and movie director Sergio Leone; trend-setting detective films by Di Leo and Damiani; comedy, an Italian product if ever there was one, pushed to grotesque excess by such masters as Risi, Germi and Scola, or seasoned with piquant sauciness. But lording it over the decade was a bevy of stunning actors who were the envy of the film industry worldwide: Volonté, Giannini, Sordi, Vitti, Gassman, Mangano, Manfredi and Mastroianni. This exciting retrospective takes a panoramic look at a unique season in Italian filmmaking, possibly the last to have been so successful and so rich in talent. A lot of the 'seventies' creative energy was soon to abate, couched in the cotton wool of the following decade... and not only in the film industry.
