In many countries democratic systems are being consumed from the inside, while in others such as the Philippines they are dying: they are being silently yet inexorably killed off. Journalist Maria Ressa and news website Rappler's editors are fighting President Rodrigo Duterte, accusing him of allowing a free hand to the death squads that have executed tens of thousands of people in four years, turning the country into a de facto dictatorship. Chosen by Time magazine as person of the year 2018, Ressa is the last survivor of an unjust war: facts, quality journalism and kindness are her defences. But Duterte uses the social media to control the country, unleashing Facebook's trolls who hunt her down both on line and in real life in an effort to silence her. We hold the line tracks the work of Ressa and her staff, accompanying them for over a year amid threats to their profession and their personal safety, using the voices of victims, oppositionists and exponents of pro-government militias to reveal the true face of President Duterte's war on drugs.
