directed by Pier Paolo Pasolini. Italy, 1968, 98 min.
A good-looking young guest seduces the inhabitants of an industrialist’s villa, throwing their lives into chaos, in this scathing attack on the smug bourgeoisie fated to plummet into the void lurking beneath their soulless self-righteousness. In this ambiguous and disconcertingly attractive film, as Jean Renoir pointed out, “we feel the turmoil that Pasolini brings to the screen, crashing into the audience’s awareness. The scandalous doesn’t lie in any obscenity, which is indeed totally absent; the real scandal is the film’s sincerity”.
