directed by Billy Wilder, starring Robert Stephens, Colin Blakely, Christopher Lee, USA, UK 1970, 125 min., colour, 35mm, original version with Italian subtitles
A woman in despair over her husband’s disappearance seeks the famous detective’s aid. They both end up getting involved in an international intrigue on the banks of Loch Ness. Wilder mischievously takes possession of history’s best-known sleuth to parody his investigative genius, creating an affected, ambiguous figure, in this great mise-en-scène by an ageing master in which he propels his obsession with disguise into the modern era.
