directed by Alessandro Blasetti. Italy, 1941, 109 min.
Blasetti was dreaming of the American cinema when he made the most celebrated blockbuster of the Fascist era. A year's filming, huge crowds and imposing sets recreate a legendary kingdom with its power struggles, its heroic knights, its fratricidal kings and its dainty damsels in a "grandiose historical fairy-tale" (Lizzani) from which so much fantasy cinema was to take its inspiration.
