While Covid-19 was bringing the world to its knees, malaria was continuing to kill more people in Africa than every other disease and war on our planet put together. But what would happen if we discovered a simple plant capable of combating marsh fever and of saving a thousand lives a day? A plant that you can grow in your own garden, that costs next to nothing and that is available to everyone? Not everybody would be happy with such a development, especially not the multinational
pharmaceutical corporations that fear for their profits. This is an umpteenth form of exploitation of the continent, deplored and combated by the film's three African protagnists who believe that a cure based on local solutions could prevent millions of deaths.
Katharina Weingartner is a director and producer for radio who currently lives in Vienna after spending many years in New York. She creates films and radio programmes, books and exhibitions on urban culture and politics, feminism, pop culture and the consumer society. Her more recent films include film Sneaker Stories made in 2008 on street sneaker and gym shoe culture, The Gruen Effect made in 2010 on the architect who invented the shopping mall, and The Fever made in 2019
