Actress Elisabeth Vogler has shut herself away in an inexplicable silence. Hospitalised, she is cared for by nurse Alma, with whom she develops a complex and ambiguous relationship. This may well be the director's boldest film in stylistic terms, rich in visual and narrative invention and with two outstanding leading ladies.

This documentary consists in extremely rare amateur footage filmed by Bergman himself on the sets of his movies, revealing the often light-hearted 'behind-the-scenes' moments of his most famous films. The director is accompanied by his favourite actors, including Bibi Andersson, Liv Ullmann, Max von Sydow and Ingrid Thulin.
