directed by Billy Wilder, starring James Cagney, Horst Buchholz, Pamela Tiffin, USA 1961, 108 min., b/w, 35mm, original version with Italian subtitles
A manager with Coca Cola in Berlin in the grip of the Cold War has to look after his boss’s lovely daughter, who is in love with a communist. With car chases back and forth between east and west, the film paints a hilarious and mesmerising picture of Soviet sluggishness while equally criticising the capitalist chomping machine that stops at nothing, interested only in building up wealth. The film’s peerless champion is the volcanic James Cagney, a veteran of the merciless gangster movies of the ‘30s and here an uproarious if cryptic show-stealer.
