directed by Pier Paolo Pasolini. Italy, 1967, 105 min.
The director turns his back on the contemporary world in favor of an archaic, desertlike, tribal dimension, identifying the unfathomable contradiction of human pulsations in Oedipus, the archetype of Western identity. The film has an openly stated autobiographical and Freudian intent, bringing to the screen the director’s own mythologised life and his Oedipus complex.
