Friday 9 and Saturday 10 July 2021, from 4.30 pm to 7.30 pm you can attend, for the very first time, the performance by Michele Rizzo that completes his work entitled REST in the context of the 2020 Art Quadriennial FUORI, curated by Sarah Cosulich and Stefano Collicelli Cagol and hosted by the Palazzo delle Esposizioni in Rome until 18 July.
The performance, organised by the Fondazione Quadriennale di Roma and the Azienda Speciale Palaexpo, is to be held in the same room that hosts the artist's work, thus finally bringing it to completion. Conceived by Rizzo specifically for the exhibition and produced in the context of the Mattatoio's artistic and productive residency programme entitled Prender-si cura curated by Ilaria Mancia, REST comprises sculptural, sound, light and performance elements.
During the inauguration on 27 October 2020, four sculptures reminiscent of ravers' bodies exhausted by dancing, were carried inside the Palazzo delle Esposizioni on stretchers similar to those used in Easter processions by a group of dancers interpreting a choreography by Rizzo, and then laid out on decorated carpets and immersed in a sound and light landscape.
Left unfinished due to government restrictions last October, REST is finally going to be completed on 9 and 10 July 2021. Pairs of dancers in the centre of the installation will be performing gestures and movements designed to highlight the way in which care for others demands proximity, contact and dance as a driving force for rethinking relationships.
Just as Rizzo approaches sculpture by discovering in its execution a performative and plastic quality akin to the practice of movement, in his performance entitled REST dance is handled as a sculptural action: each performer models his body on that of his partner with soft loops sanctioning the rediscovery of movement after a period of rest.
REST is a further moment in Michele Rizzo's exploration of performance as a moment of speculation for the individual even when the movements involved are shared by many.
The production of the performance is a result of cooperation between the Azienda Speciale Palaexpo and the Fondazione Quadriennale di Roma which began in the work's research and production phase with the artist's residency in the spaces of La Pelanda for producing the work, and continued right up until it entered the halls of the Palazzo delle Esposizioni. The synergy between these institutions and the support of Rome the Capital City have thus made it possible to complete the only work in the exhibition that had remained unfinished, providing proof of the fact that safeguarding artists' work is a primary goal.
