USA, 1931, 79 min., 35mm original version with Italian subtitles

directed by Mervyn LeRoy, starring Edward G. Robinson and Douglas Fairbanks Jr.

The rise and fall of Chicago crime boss Caesar “Rico” Bandello, “one of American cinema’s first true anti-heroes” (Lourcells). A milestone in the gangster movie genre, this fast-paced movie with its crude and violent realism is also striking for the ambiguity in the relationship between its two protagonists, which has frequently been interpreted in a homosexual light.
