(France 1964) directed by Jacques Demy, starring Catherine Deneuve, Nino Castelnuovo and Anne Vernon, colour, 91 min., 35mm, original version with Italian subtitles
Geneviève loves a young mechanic called Guy but her mother disapproves. When Guy is called up to go to war in Algeria, Geneviève finds out she is pregnant… Demy’s most celebrated film is a musical fairy tale that has always charmed audiences with its pastel colours and its melancholy tale of crossed destinies and lost love. It won the Palme d’Or in Cannes, but more importantly, it set the then very young Catherine Deneuve on the road to stardom.
Film introduced by Piero Spila
