Clothes have always spoken volumes about identity, roles in society and cultural stereotypes, but when they become works of art, they acquire an even stronger significance. Taking our cue from Cinzia Ruggeri's ironic and irreverent creations,we put together a thoroughly female showcase of women artists who have tackled the theme of clothes. Just as Frida Kahlo wore traditional Mexican clothes to show her support for her country's revolution, so artist Lucy Orta designs overalls for urban survival in an effort to propose alternative models of sustainability, whether social or ecological, in what is in effect a dramatic era for the fate of our planet.
