Less well-known than Sirk’s remake with Lana Turner, Stahl’s film was one of the first to encounter the hostility of the Hays Code now in full swing, especially over the way it addresses racial issues. But the story of the four leading characters, two mothers and two daughters, has never ceased to enthuse or to move audiences.
