The fate of a man and a child, both of them desperate and on the run from the police, cross paths in a small town shortly after the war. Losey was filming in Italy for the first time, but during filming he discovered he had been blacklisted by the Committee for Anti-American Activities. He could neither put his name to the film nor edit it, but the result was a mesmerising movie nevertheless. The version screened here tonight has been masterfully restored by the Cineteca di Bologna.
