(Italy/France, 1964) directed by Pier Paolo Pasolini, starring Enrique Irazoqui, Margherita Caruso, Susanna Pasolini, b/w, 140’, 35mm
Back when the Bible inspired only spectacular and exploitative films, Pasolini imposes his vision of the Gospel by remaining radically true to it, a barebones and thrilling representation that fully expresses the distance from an archaic and mythical world and the outrageous originality of Christ's figure. The non-professional cast is directed with extraordinary skill. Among them towers Irazoqui, a Spanish student involved in the anti-Franco guerrilla, in the role of Jesus.
