(49th Parallel, UK 1941), directed by Michael Powell, starring Leslie Howard, Laurence Olivier and Anton Walbrook, black and white, 123 min., 35mm, original version with Italian subtitles
A German U-boot sinks in Hudson Bay and its surviving Nazi crew members, cause numerous incidents as they travel across Canada. In this, their third joint venture, Powell and Pressburger produced an unusual propaganda movie that is at once “an adventurous thriller, a pacifist manifesto and a drama that offers us comic interludes” (E. Azzano), but above all, it is a paean to a multicultural society, devoid of all rhetoric and way ahead of its time.
Film introduced by Patrizia Pistagnesi
