directed by Billy Wilder, starring Franchot Tone, Anne Baxter, Akim Tamiroff, USA 1943, 96 min., b/w, DCP, original version with Italian subtitles
Egypt, World War Two. A British noncommissioned officer takes the place of a spy working for the Germans. Wilder’s second American film as a director is a piece of anti-German wartime propaganda devised to accompany the United States’ decision to enter the war, but with his magical touch the military plot turns into an adventure-cum-comedy, with superb performances from Erich von Stroheim in the role of an icy General Rommel and from a very young yet already splendid Anne Baxter.
