(France/Germany 1955) directed by Max Ophuls, starring Martine Carol, Peter Ustinov, Anton Walbrook, color, 115’, 35mm VO original language with Italian subtitles

The rise and fall of Lola Montès, famous dancer and adventurer of the 19th century, from her love stories with composer Franz Liszt and king Ludwig I of Bavaria, to the day she joins a circus. Max Ophuls' last film and spiritual legacy, Lola Montès is full of the director's audacious visions and storytelling skills. A fiasco at the time of its first release - even if people like Truffaut, Cocteau and Rossellini praised it –, in time it has become a cult film for generations of film buffs.
