May 1945. Maciek, a Nationalist who fought the Germans, is ordered to kill a young Communist leader who is coming back to Poland after years of secret political action. But a girl's love for Maciek amplifies the moral doubts that start to creep into the young activist. A seminal work in Polish Cinema, the film made a name internationally for his director and foreshadowed many of the cinematic New Waves to come. According to Martin Scorsese, "one of the best film ever made."
