The slums just outside Rome in the 'seventies seethe with a mass of primitive retrogrades led by a cross-eyed miser played by the great Nino Manfredi. Scola's direction, which won an award in Cannes, plunges us headfirst into the unspeakable inferno that continues to thrive on the outskirts of the modern city.
