(UK 1960) directed by Jack Cardiff, starring Trevor Howard, Dean Stockwell, Wendy Hiller, b/w, 103’, 35mm original language with Italian subtitles
Son of a coarse and violent miner, Paul grew up close-knit with his mother, whose jealousy prevents him from having any relationship with other women. A married colleague will take him into adulthood, but she will destroy his family's fragile balance, too. For this successful and enthralling adaptation of D. H. Lawrence's novel, credit must be given to the distinguished cast (including a very young Dean Stockwell) and to Freddie Francis' amazing photography, which won an Academy Award.
