(Italy 1952) directed by Vittorio De Sica, starring Carlo Battisti, Maria Pia Casilio, b/w, 89’, 35mm
An elderly ministerial employee ends up alone and in dire straits financially. He only finds solace in his little dog and the friendship of a young maid working in the building from which he's about to be evicted. A masterpiece of the De Sica-Zavattini collaboration and of the whole Italian Cinema, too, Umberto D. marks the ultimate expression of Neorealism's ethics and aesthetics, both in terms of social statement and a sorrowfully human artistic gaze.
