(UK 1966) directed by Roman Polanski, starring Donald Pleasence, Françoise Dorléac, Lionel Stander, b/w, 113’, 35mm original language with Italian subtitles
George and his young wife Teresa live in a castle on an island where nothing ever happens. The humdrum is broken when Dick and Albert, two gangsters on the run, arrive on the island. Albert dies and Dick holds the two spouses hostage: a surreal threesome ensues. An unpredictable and vitriolic black comedy, the film is orchestrated by Polanski with great skill and fun, constantly double-crossing the audience with the complicity of a magnificent cast. The film won the Golden Bear at the Berlin International Film Festival.
