United Kingdom, 1957, 105 min., Italian version, directed by Charles Chaplin, starring Charles Chaplin, Maxine Audley and Jerry Desmonde
Deposed in the course of a revolution, a European monarch is exiled to the United States, but he soon ends up in the net of the Commission for Anti-American Activities (as indeed happened to Chaplin himself in real life). In Truffaut's view, this caustic satire, which so few people understood at the time, was the great director's most personal film.
