France, 1934, 89 min., original version with Italian subtitles, directed by Jean Vigo, starring Jean Dasté, Dita Parlo and Michel Simon
The film explores the difficult life of two young newly-weds who choose to live together on a rickety barge, the Atalante, governed by old père Jules and a cabin boy. This, the third and last film made by Vigo, who died extremely young, is a perfect synthesis of the avant-garde and of social cinema, "between realism and aestheticism" as Truffaut was to write.
