Italy, France 82 min., 1954, directed by Roberto Rossellini, starring Ingrid Bergman, George Sanders and Marie Mauban
An English couple in crisis travels to Naples, but the journey turns into a dramatic piece of soul-searching for both of them. Going beyond Neo-Realism, Rossellini here points the way to the existential cinema of the 1960s, but at the time only Cahiers du Cinéma (rightly) hailed the film as a masterpiece.
